Survey on the use of electronic collision warning and conspicuity systems in general aviation

In General Aviation, flying is predominantly based on visual flight rules (VFR). The principle of “see and be seen” or  “see and avoid” applies. This leads time and again to dangerous approaches, in individual cases even to a collision in the air.

In addition, more and more drones will fly in the airspace in the future. There are already various electronic collision warning systems and apps for General Aviation aircraft on the avionics market, but they all do not fulfil 100 percent protection against collisions, and only a small proportion of aircraft are equipped with such a system.

Work is underway at the national and international levels to develop a uniform electronic collision warning system that can be used by all General Aviation airspace users.

This survey is intended to help provide a brief overview of the use of collision warning systems, as well as to learn more about what pilots want (require) in such a system.
