Salary: Up to £50,000 per annum depending on experience

The Future Flight Challenge (FFC) will enable the UK to build, use and export new, greener ways of flying through advances in electric and autonomous flight technology. We are looking for someone to join our Innovation team to support the delivery of the CAA’s response to the FFC through your contribution of sophisticated knowledge, experience, advice and specialist expertise.

The Role

You’ll act as a case officer guiding and supporting innovators towards regulatory readiness, guiding innovators with the aim of sharing knowledge and helping to recommend future regulatory frameworks.

You will help have a say in the UK leading a new revolution in aviation by bringing together technologies in electrification, digitisation and autonomy to build new modes of air travel and capability.

Core Accountabilities will include:

  • Plan roadmaps in conjunction with innovators to achieve the objectives of the FFC
  • Provide expert advice and guidance on regulatory expectations to maintain safety, security and consumer protection
  • Facilitate discussions and drive resolutions between industry and regulatory teams in order to gain regulatory approval for the trial of innovative solutions
  • Facilitate tests in a Sandbox environment to build the evidence supporting regulatory approvals for trials
  • Contribute to crafting regulatory principles, standard scenarios and templates

About You

Expertise in an aviation specialism like airspace, airworthiness, air traffic management, artificial intelligence, new propulsion technologies, UAS, software development or flight operations would be desirable.

We want to hear from you if you have an interest in technology and innovation in areas such as airspace integration, urban air mobility, electrification and battery technologies and digitisation and automation.

Applying a risk-based and principles-led approach where there are currently no standards or regulations will be essential.

Planning and prioritising cases across multiple partners, being able to understand challenges with new aviation technologies and be flexible and adaptable in your approach are some of the key skills you’ll need.

Additional Information

This job will require travel to Innovators that could be located around the UK and internationally when travel restrictions have been lifted and it is safe to do so.

Given the impact of Covid-19, it’s likely that you will work remotely to begin with as we plan for a return to work within the government guidelines.
