Ukraine’s Defense Forces Down Russian AI-Equipped “Molniya” Drones for the First Time
Ukraine’s security and defense forces successfully intercepted Russian “Molniya” drones equipped with artificial intelligence elements for the first time in late June. The targets were destroyed using General Cherry AIR and General Cherry Bullet interceptor drones while repelling an attack in the Zaporizhzhia direction.
According to representatives of Zaporizhzhia Police units, as well as fighters from the UAV Interceptor Division “Posipaky” of the 39th Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment, the 23rd National Guard Brigade “Khortytsia,” and the 710th Separate Security Brigade of the State Special Transport Service, these are among the first confirmed cases of effective interception of the new Molniya modification, which the Russian army is currently actively testing in the Zaporizhzhia direction.
Preliminary data indicates that such drones are being deployed by Russia’s 50th Separate Unmanned Systems Brigade “Varyag,” which, together with the “Rubikon” unit, is one of the primary operators of new drone technologies in this direction. Zaporizhzhia Oblast has become one of the key testing grounds for Russian unmanned systems — from long-range FPV drones to upgraded Molniyas and Shahed-type strike UAVs.
Military personnel emphasize that successfully destroying the new Molniyas is a complex task, as they fly autonomously and are difficult to detect. Russians typically launch up to 10 such Molniyas at various times of day.
The Zaporizhzhia direction remains one of the most technologically intensive theaters of operations, where both sides continuously test new drone warfare solutions. This makes successful interceptions of new Russian systems critical for assessing the effectiveness of modern counter-UAV capabilities.
