AERIUM Analytics – Drone Payload Specialist

About the Position

AERIUM is seeking a Drone Payload Specialist to join our talented Development team. The primary focus of this role is to lead the mechanical development of payloads, ground control stations and the various communications and integration systems required by the complete system. This will involve high bandwidth, low latency communications components implemented in spectrum-saturated sites as well as BVLOS drone missions. The successful candidate will have a strong aptitude for solving both hardware and software problems in this domain, along with the integration of these components into our other missions and products.

Reports to: Software Development Manager

Location: 1915 11 St SE Calgary, AB

Travel Requirement: 10 to 20% (5 to 10 weeks per year)

Term: Two Years

Key Accountabilities

To be successful in this role, you will need extensive knowledge of radio communications fundamentals, camera sensors, orientation-control hardware integration, and modern software design methodologies. Quality and scalability are core values for our team and critical to the long-term success of our business.

Responsibilities include the mechanical design of drone payloads and integration of data streams with other components and assisting with building software by writing code and unit tests.

This is a safety sensitive position and police background checks and/or drug and alcohol testing may be required to access client facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Build secure, fault-tolerant mechatronics systems
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to design, plan and implement high quality products
  • Build quality and excellence into every part of the product, utilizing automated testing tools and strong peer review processes
  • Keep pace with developments in the field and bring new ideas to the team

Core Skills/Technologies:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Mechatronics Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent work experience
  • Wireless communication protocols, including radio mesh and cellular networks
  • Sensor Integration (RGB Camera, Thermal, LiDAR, etc.)
  • Global Positioning System Integration
  • Understanding of secure communication and encryption
  • Solidworks, CAD, 3D Printing
  • C#, .net core, C++, Python
  • Familiar with agile methodologies, unit testing and design patterns
  • Good written/oral communication skills in both technical and non-technical settings

Bonus Skills/Technologies:

  • Experience with drone operations and communication; Advanced or Basic pilot license
  • Experience with aviation weight-and-balance considerations
  • DevOps and continuous delivery pipelines
  • Graphic design of UI assets
  • Cloud-native application design, especially with Azure
  • Selenium and similar automated integration test platforms
  • React/Angular/Bootstrap
  • NoSQL
  • Docker

SAIT Involvement

This is a funded position for a two-year term as part of a research project between AERIUM Analytics and SAIT. The successful candidate will be employed directly by SAIT for the term of the project and assigned to AERIUM’s team for the duration.
