We are the UK’s aviation regulator and recognised as a world leader in its field. Our activities are diverse, enabling the aviation industry to meet the highest safety standards, and we pride ourselves on our ability to adapt to the constantly evolving aviation environment.

The Role

As a UAS (Unmanned Aircraft Systems) Policy Specialist, with a technical focus on Avionics, it will be your role to act as the divisions subject matter authority in this critical area. In this role you will not only look after a stable of your own policy development projects but also be asked to advise, and provide expertise to, the wider UAS Policy team. This is to ensure that the team functions as a unit and is therefore able to meet its obligations to the public as well as our industrial, governmental, legal and internal partners.

The UAS sector is a novel and exciting industry to be a part of. Its growth is fast paced, and innovation comes thick and fast. Functionally, this means that you will have to constantly develop your understanding and interpretation of UAS certification regulatory frameworks and often deal with a certain level of ambiguity. More specifically this will involve identifying and understanding emerging issues, what they mean in context and what impact they may have. All of this will help you, and the wider team, in the delivery of the overall strategic goal of ensuring that the CAA is at the forefront of the production of high quality and relevant guidance material.

A key part of this role is the ability to communicate, in both written and verbal formats. Due to the technical nature of the subject matter, and the variety of partners both national and international, it is important that you are confident in your ability to easily interpret, express and explain often complex concepts and information. Additionally, the capacity to engage and develop other people’s understanding of these concepts will serve you and the team well in the development of comprehensive policy.

The UAS division is always looking for new ways to improve and build value for the CAA’s partners. You should also inhabit this approach and should constantly seek new ways and methods to increase the efficiency of not only out processes but our policy and guidance materials. This is never more important than in a sector where technological innovation can be rapid.
