The aero modelling team of PES Institute of Technology made their college proud by showcasing their Unmanned Aero Vehicle (UAV) at the SAE Aero Design West 2015 held in California, US last month.

Team Aeolus bagged the ninth position in the design category. Recognition on a global platform was the fruit of over six months of hard work and meticulous planning. The crew consists of students in the pre-final year of the mechanical engineering department.

Ashwini Karmakar, a team member, said, “We started our preparations from September last year. We began with mathematical analysis of the dimensions of the UAV and proceeded to model the same on the software.”

Team Captain Varun Kumar said “The entire experience gave us a lot of exposure. We learnt a lot by interacting with international teams.”

The project was funded by the management. “There were many instances of crash landings and other such problems, which the students overcame through trial and error method,” he said.

The students were not put off by initial failures. V. Krishna, Head of the Department, said, “Funds were not a problem even when the students had to rebuild the model due to damage caused by crash landings. Special lab facilities were provided and the reduction in course work helped the students.”
