AUSTRALIA’S beaches are being filmed like never before and the pictures do not make pretty viewing.

Armed with a remote-controlled helicopter nicknamed the “scientific predator”, CSIRO scientists are circumnavigating Australia, documenting the tonnes of litter left or washed up on the nation’s beaches and calculating the impact on marine life.

The team made it to Adelaide yesterday, where they surveyed West Beach.

Ecologist Dr Denise Hardesty said South Australia’s beaches had fared well in comparison to those interstate – possibly because of the state’s container deposit scheme, which promoted recycling.
