The inaugural drone helipad on the rooftop of a building is set to be established in Brno, Czechia

The city of Brno is about to achieve a world-first milestone, with the construction of the first drone
helipad on a newly emerging building in the city centre. This helipad will facilitate the receipt of
drone deliveries, which will then be distributed throughout the building. This pioneering project is
being undertaken by the company 3L Robotics and has gained the support of the European Space
Agency.

This helipad serves as the final destination for drone deliveries. Anyone within the building can order
a delivery via drone and specify the building’s address. The system automatically detects the helipad
where the delivery will be made. When the drone with the package approaches the building, it is
guided to a precise landing spot on the helipad. The helipad then automatically transports the
package inside the building, where the recipient can retrieve it, or it can be transferred to an
autonomous vehicle for transportation to the recipient’s office.

This challenging project has proven to be quite demanding, and we had to seek out several partners
to assist us. We had to establish connections between our helipads and the flight operation system
responsible for operating the drones.“says Lubos Lnenicka, CEO of company 3L Robotics.
One of the key moments of the Drone Helipad project was the partnership with the renowned
company Honeywell, which is a leading player in the field of aviation technology development.
Together with Honeywell Aerospace, 3L Robotics is integrating their technologies into the drone
control system, enabling more efficient and safer drone coordination and ensuring transport routes
between individual helipads.

“Honeywell is developing a certifiable ground control station that will help verify vertiport
availability, check weather conditions for flight, and assist with flight operations, including returning
to base,” says Jan Beran, CGS Architect from Honeywell.
Honeywell has experience with a range of technologies needed for the ground control station and
continues to innovate its solutions through projects within SESAR 3. These technologies will play a
crucial role in the future of aviation.

“Combining our expertise in drone technology with Honeywell Aerospace’s know-how allows us to
push the boundaries of package delivery, directly to the rooftop, and then transport it indoors. The
Helipad can then transfer the package to another autonomous vehicle and deliver it right to the
recipient’s table,” says 3L Robotics CEO Luboš Lněnička. “We are confident that our collaboration will
change the way people receive their packages.”

Cooperation with the European Space Agency

Another significant milestone for 3L Robotics was presenting the project to the European Space
Agency (ESA) commission, which subsequently decided to support this innovative initiative. This
decision places the Drone Helipad in the prestigious ESA Business Innovation Center, opening new
possibilities for financing, further development, and international collaboration.

“This intriguing project showcases the opportunities that arise from combining space industry
technologies with drone technologies on Earth. We are pleased to have chosen such a project for our
Business Innovation Center,” says Michal Kuneš, Head of ESA BIC Incubators. “Collaborating with ESA
will provide us with crucial knowledge and resources essential for the successful development of our
project,” adds Luboš Lněnička.

The Drone Helipad project promises to revolutionize the delivery industry and open up new
possibilities for fast and efficient package transportation in cities and even in remote and hard-to-
reach locations. With a partnership with Honeywell Aerospace and support from ESA, 3L Robotics
becomes a key player in this innovative field.
