CAA – Emerging Policy Specialist

CAA – Emerging Policy Specialist

Salary: £48,545 up to £60,000 dependent upon experience

Contract Type: full time, permanent

We are the UK’s aviation regulator and recognised as a world leader in its field. Our activities are diverse, enabling the aviation industry to meet the highest safety standards, and we pride ourselves on our ability to adapt to the constantly evolving aviation environment.

The Role

As a regulator, one of the biggest challenges we face is ensuring that policy is developed in line with industry technological and methodological advancements. Post EU-exit the CAA has been presented with an outstanding opportunity to enable a dynamic programme of policy advancement designed to enable the UK to be at the forefront of innovation in the future aviation global marketplace. This means addressing some of the most technically exciting, controversial and pressing issues in aviation today and into the future. These topics range from the integration of hybrid electric vehicles into UK Airspace to the delivery of carbon Net Zero and beyond. To this end, the CAA is building a progressive, multi-disciplinary team and as part of this we are looking to hire up to ten Emerging Policy Specialists.

As an Emerging Policy Specialist, you will be presented with unique, status quo defying policy challenges that will truly test your ability to problem solve, manage varied stakeholder groups and drive delivery. If you are the kind of person who thrives in environments with a high degree of variety or where you will be forging new ground, then this position offers you an unparalleled opportunity to do just that. Acting as a consultant, you will partner with external customers and internal policy experts to deliver policy in line with the policy development process. You will be tasked with quickly developing and assimilating knowledge and expertise to ensure that the policy we are creating is fit for purpose, enables industry development and prioritises the safety of the public.

The decisions and actions you will take in this role will have far reaching implications and, in some instances, may go as far as to set a global precedence. If this excites you, then please do apply.

About You

  • It would be highly desirable to have an understanding and interest in the innovation and technology trends that will shape the future of aviation, such as:
  • artificial intelligence, machine learning, and autonomy
  • software engineering
  • systems engineering
  • net zero propulsion, including hydrogen, electrification, and battery technologies
  • An understanding or background of working within a regulate environment either within an aviation specialism (such as airspace, airworthiness, air traffic management, flight operations, UAS, aviation security, or consumer protection) or another safety critical industry is desirable.
  • Possess a flexible and adaptable approach with evidence of working in highly dynamic and changing environments.
  • Proven expertise in applying a risk-based and principles-led approach in an ambiguous environment where there are currently no standards or regulations and where priorities can change.
  • A curious and quick learner, able to seek out information to advise the project and generate new insights.
  • An effective written and verbal communication style with experience in management of relationships with industry and internal stakeholders.

What Can We Offer You?

This is a unique opportunity to be part of something truly seismic in scope. It is broad enough to offer you the chance to either broaden your horizons or alternatively maximise your key specialism. If you are driven by a higher calling to dedicate yourself to something that will have a tangible impact on people’s lives, not only today but beyond, then we’d love to receive your application.
