AVSS Develops the PRS-MAVIC: Parachute Recovery and Flight Termination System for DJI Mavic 3

(New Brunswick, Canada) – AVSS has announced that the company has developed a Parachute Recovery and Flight Termination System for the DJI Mavic 3 and Mavic 3 Cine, referenced as the PRS-MAVIC. The PRS-MAVIC is intended to enable complex flight operations for commercial operators and will be sold for $1,900 USD.

The company is now accepting pre-orders from authorized dealers and commercial operators with shipments to the AVSS dealer network commencing in August 2022.

The PRS-MAVIC is a simple plug-and-play design. The commercial operators using the product will have comfort knowing that the system includes a Flight Termination System and that they do not have to send their drone away for several weeks for Flight Termination System installation. Moreover, the PRS-MAVIC is deployed with a field-replaceable spring design.

The PRS-MAVIC will include a Parachute Recovery System (PRS), a Flight Termination System (FTS), an Automatic Triggering System (ATS), a Manual Triggering Device (MTD), a Rugged GPC Case, and ASTM F3322 documentation.

“Over the last several years, AVSS has developed several ASTM F3322-18 compliant parachute recovery and flight termination systems for drone manufacturers and DJI platforms.”, said Vice President of Operations, Mariah Murray. “We received numerous requests for our product to be equipped on the DJI Mavic 3 since December, and we are pleased to supply and support our more than 50 authorized DJI dealer network to enable flight over people and comply with EASA’s PDRA requirements for an independent activation of a flight termination system.”

For AVSS, this is especially opportune timing with EASA’s publication on May 6th for enhancement containment: “drones operating close to densely populated areas or airports are required to be equipped with systems (Flight Termination Systems) preventing the drone from flying into an unauthorised area, unless the drone is already approved to operate in high-risk environments. This is referred to as ‘enhanced containment’.”

With this new announcement from EASA, AVSS is not only complying with the requirements for their PRS-M300 for the DJI M300 RTK, but now exploring the benefit of compliance for the PRS-MAVIC as EASA testing requirements are exceeded through the robust ASTM F3322-18 compliance that involves 45 failure scenarios under the supervision of a third-party testing agency.
