Freefly Systems Lead Testing Engineer – Drone Program

Freefly Systems, the company that redefined camera movement with the introduction of the Mōvi (a compact, lightweight, 3-axis camera stabilizer) is growing. We are on the lookout for a uniquely talented Testing Lead who loves to design, execute, and manage tests for flying robots to get in on the fun.

As a member of the Freefly Engineering Team, you’ll join us on our mission to develop the next generation of innovative camera systems, unmanned aerial vehicles, robotic systems, and consumer electronic devices in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary, startup environment with a direct impact on our product roadmap.

The ideal candidate is a jack of all trades with a diverse background of experience in testing complex electromechanical systems. Most importantly, you must have a positive “can do” attitude, play well with others, embrace a challenge, and realize that every failure is a critical step toward creating innovative products.

Responsibilities

  • Engineering background to design, execute, analyze, and document tests
  • Software, mechanical, and systems engineering understanding to be able to pick the right software and hardware from the product engineering team for test configurations
  • Strong computer skills to analyze data and execute software scripts
  • Approaching problems with first principles thinking, and the ability to reduce overconfidence
  • Management experience to run testing projects from start to finish, including delegating tasks to the rest of the team
  • Understanding of product development processes and life cycles to manage the EV/DV testing phases as a whole
  • Ability to reduce entropy
  • Motivation to raise the bar
  • Ability to balance low fidelity and high fidelity tests in order to execute quick and dirty test when needed, and manage formal tests
  • Ability to push back against Engineering to ensure we deliver world-class products

Qualifications

  • Own management of test fleet and hardware. Keep their hardware and software up to date. Keep unit trackers up to date
  • Manage test configurations. Update hardware and software of test aircraft to get them ready for testing
  • Manage engineering testing efforts, delegating the execution of tests as necessary, and delegating writing automated tests or building test rigs as necessary. Kickoff and close test phases that line up with product development phases
  • Be the gate for engineering readiness before products and prototypes are handed off to internal and external beta testers
  • Give feedback to engineering on requirements for completeness, lack of ambiguity, and testability
  • Create and manage test plans, including continuously improving software acceptance tests for regression
  • Design, develop and fabricate test fixtures
  • Fly Freefly drones to execute engineering test plans. Go beyond the test plans to find possible areas of failure in features
  • Use the command line to execute scripts, manipulate files, run programs on Windows, Linux, and Mac
  • Support execution of various engineering tests, including software acceptance tests
  • Organize test data, perform tests data analysis, including running Matlab scripts to provide plots, and prepare reports of test results
  • Report issues with reproduction steps. Verify software fixes and sign off on resolutions
  • Improve testing techniques and processes (ex: documentation standards, automated tests, develop software for test management with other engineers)
