Wingcopter and the African Drone and Data Academy win in BMZ COVID-19 Hackathon
Wingcopter and the African Drone and Data Academy recently entered a hackathon organized by German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the European Commission (EuropeAid) together they have been chosen as one of the nine winners.
The pitch
We applied with a concept to use drones and data for good, improving health supply chains and opening up new perspectives in Africa, especially during COVID-19, together with our partners UNICEF and African Drone & Data Academy powered by UNICEF. The hackathon was initiated by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the European Commission (EuropeAid). We can’t wait to start this project!
Drone and Data Aid
Region: Malawi, Rwanda
The drone solution ensures an efficient health supply chain in remote areas and moreover maps pre- and post-COVID-19 impacts. The project will establish a “multi-purpose” drone network with local graduates to enter professions such as pilots, project managers and safety and maintenance workers. This solution does not happen in isolation but in an innovative ecosystem with the necessary legal and governmental infrastructure to support it.

The BMZ #SmartDevelopmentHack
The corona shock has placed a heavy burden on developing countries causing enormous social and economic consequences.
With #SmartDevelopmentHack the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) is calling for innovative digital solutions to tackle the challenges caused by the coronavirus outbreak in low- and middle-income countries. Under the patronage of the BMZ together with “Team Europe” partners from the EU Commission, other EU member states, tech-companies and civil society, we are launching the global hackathon #SmartDevelopmentHack as part of the upcoming German Council Presidency.
