Drone Alliance Europe Releases U-space Whitepaper 2.0

Drone Alliance Europe (DAE) is pleased to release its U-space Whitepaper 2.0 to inform the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and European Commission as they continue to develop a regulatory framework for a U-space system.

In July 2019, DAE released the first version of its U-space Whitepaper to assist EASA in the development of its U-space Opinion. The updated Whitepaper 2.0 expands upon a number of key features, including the concept of a federated and distributed U-space system.

DAE’s U-space Whitepaper 2.0 explains that a “federated model encourages multiple providers to enter the market and in doing so enhances safety and efficiency while driving down cost to the end users.” 

The Whitepaper 2.0 also updates the principles that should guide the next phase of EU U-space framework development. They are:

1. Prioritise a model that is operator-focused and performance-centric
2. Empower U-space Service Providers (USPs) to take on as much responsibility as possible
3. Ensure efficient cooperation among USPs in a competitive marketplace
4. Enhance safety standards by creating a robust approval and oversight framework
5. Streamline interfaces with ATM to provide those items that ensure mutual benefit to U-space operators and ATM partners

DAE Executive Director Christoph Raab stated:

“DAE received excellent feedback on its first Whitepaper and its comments on EASA’s draft U-space Opinion. To continue assisting EASA and the European Commission, DAE has outlined a number of recommendations in its Whitepaper 2.0 to contribute towards a successful and future proof U-space system ahead of EASA’s final U-space Opinion in March 2020.”
