Yann Arthus-Bertrand Appointed DJI Master

DJI, the world’s leader in civilian drones and image stabilization systems, has appointed French aerial photographer and film director Yann Arthus-Bertrand as DJI Master. For the first time ever, the legendary artist decided to deploy DJI drone and cinematic camera technology while shooting the film “Woman.” The DJI Inspire 2 drone with a Zenmuse X7 camera was used extensively on location, supported by a DJI team.

“When the pioneer of aerial photography, Yann Arthus-Bertrand, adopts DJI technology, magic happens,” said Ferdinand Wolf, Creative Director at DJI. “Our team helped Yann to capture beautiful shots that would not be possible with a helicopter. DJI is proud to assist this great artist in his long-term commitment to highlight the achievements and challenges of humankind and to draw attention to the need to preserve our planet and natural environment.”

Since July 2017, DJI has been working closely with Yann Arthus-Bertrand, co-director Anastasia Mikova and their production crew on several location shoots including Portugal, the Republic of the Congo and China to facilitate adoption and access to the early deployment of the Zenmuse X7 camera with its Super 35mm sensor, which was perfect for this large-scale film project. This efficient, high-quality cinematic solution in combination with the Inspire 2 drone was an ideal fit for the vision of an artist who had previously revealed the beauty of aerial photography, shot from a helicopter, in his UNESCO-sponsored picture tome “Earth from Above” that has sold more than 4 million copies worldwide.

“The sensation of flying a camera while staying on the the ground is a totally new and amazing experience for me,” said Yann Arthus-Bertrand. “We are able to shoot aerial images from a completely new perspective, and I am convinced that I will continue using drone technology for my work in the future. I wanted to be as flexible as possible when filming the environment and the women who will be the true heroes of the movie. A drone is incredibly easy to use, which facilitated our work in this complex set-up significantly.”

To mark the launch of the DJI Pro brand, DJI is launching the series “DJI Masters – The Power of Visual Storytelling,” featuring three of the world’s most accomplished imaging pioneers, Yann Arthus-Bertrand, Claudio Miranda, and Rodney Charters. The first episode of the series features a documentary on Yann Arthus-Bertrand while shooting “Woman.”

Yann Arthus-Bertrand’s movie “Woman” is due to be released in 2019.
