Twenty-seven Sammies finalists are eligible for this special recognition. Their achievements include pioneering research to understand and prevent peanut allergies; coordinating investigations to arrest gang members and halt money-transfer scams; advancing technologies to fight forest fires, improve energy efficiency, enhance worker safety and track severe weather; protecting cities from flooding; preventing famine; defending healthcare computer systems from cyber attack; and much more.
Parimal Kopardekar from NASA’s Ames Research Center designed a first-of-its-kind traffic management system for unmanned aerial vehicles, paving the way for large-scale use of commercial drones.
The winner will be announced on July 19 during an event with the 2018 finalists and Sammies alumni at the Partnership for Public Service.
