Ars Electronica SPAXELS will Rock in Rio

Rock in Rio is a world-class music festival. A star-studded lineup of acts and record-breaking attendance are the ingredients that go into its success. The promoters also go all out every year to deliver a mind-blowing audiovisual production. So, in keeping with their proud tradition, the 2017 Rock in Rio will be the first edition to wow its audience with an illuminated swarm of drones.

The Ars Electronica Spaxels® will enchant an audience of 700.000 people during seven show days between September 15th and 24th. These days will see Lady Gaga, Maroon 5, Justin Timberlake, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Guns n’ Roses, Red Hot Chili Peppers, 30 Seconds to Mars and many more on stage.

100 LED-studded drones will illuminate the night sky above the new City of Rock, an unprecedented spectacle in Latin America. The light shows will take place between the third and final show on the Palco Mundo, the World Stage.

The Spaxels will dance through the air producing exclusive designs specially created for the festival, like equalizer bows, sound waves, and guitars and of course the official Rock in Rio logo. The show design of the Ars Electronica SPAXELS® will epitomize the values of the spectacle by means of dynamic pictures: Music, awareness, and action. This is Rock in Rio.

“Pretty damned thrilling! The Spaxels are undoubtedly the way of the future as far as visualizations are concerned,” Rock in Rio Director Nuno Sousa Pinto.
