Plowman Craven is seeking an experienced UAV (drone) pilot to join a rapidly growing team aiming to revolutionise the surveying industry. With over 50 years’ experience completing a range of surveys around the world in sectors such as property, infrastructure and rail, Plowman Craven are already capitalising on this growing UAV market and have plans to become the leading UAV survey company in the UK

This is a great opportunity for a UAV pilot to join an innovative and industry leading team at an early stage of its development. The pilot will gain experience operating under Plowman Craven’s Operational Safety Case, will receive a huge amount of experience flying in highly urbanised areas, and will complete work on some of the country’s highest profile projects in London and beyond.

Depending on the ability of the candidate, the role could lead into a more senior position over time.

Role Specification

  • To complete a range of challenging UAV flights in highly urbanized areas of central London and beyond
  • To manage flight operations team members and deploy them as necessary to ensure safety of operations
  • To liaise with project managers to fulfill any project specific requirements
  • To work with surveyors to ensure successful delivery of project data to the team
  • To complete pre-flight planning and checks to ensure flight plans are appropriate and that flights can be completed safely and without incident
  • To communicate with the police, air traffic control and other relevant bodies
  • To complete on-site maintenance of UAVs as required and in line with Plowman Craven’s UAV maintenance policy
  • To ensure compliance with Plowman Craven’s permission for commercial operation and all associated legislation governing UAV flights
  • To work with the UAV technical manager to help develop operational processes and workflows

Person Specification

Minimum Requirements The successful candidate must have the following qualifications, qualities and experience as a minimum:

  • To have completed a flight assessment and ground school from a CAA approved NQE, or be able to show equivalent competency in line with CAA requirements (e.g. BMFA)
  • To have a minimum of 40 hours flying experience on small multi-rotor aircraft (<20kg), and this is evidenced in their pilot’s logbook
  • To have a high level of competency flying in non-GPS guided flight modes (Manual/ Attitude/ Height), in a variety of orientations and environmental conditions
  • To have a solid understanding of the laws governing UAV flights
  • To have a safe and risk averse approach to operations
  • To have good organizational and communication skills
  • To be able to work to agreed timescales and have good problem-solving skills
  • To be able to work as part of a team

Desirable The following qualifications and experience are desirable, but are not necessarily required:

  • Experience operating an Aerialtronics – Altura Zenith UAV
  • > 100 hours flying experience on small UAVs (<20Kg)
  • Experience flying full sized aircraft (General Aviation, Military or Commercial)
  • Experience building/ maintaining small UAVs
  • A degree in engineering or other related discipline
