Short film entirely shot with a drone premieres as Vimeo Staff Pick
Award winning short “At the End of the Cul-De-Sac” entirely filmed with a drone – in one shot
NEW YORK, April 5, 2017— A short film, heralded by TIME Magazine as one of the 6
Most Innovative Drone Films of the Year, premieres today as a Vimeo Staff Pick.
Directed by Paul Trillo and produced by Aerobo, “At the End of the Cul-De-Sac” depicts
a troubled man’s public mental breakdown and the even more troubling reaction of his
community.
“It is the first dialogue-based film shot entirely on a drone,” said Trillo. “Adding to that
technical achievement, we shot it in single ten-minute take, with no cuts. A ten-minute
take is hard to execute even with traditional filmmaking equipment and using a drone
added, even more, complexities.”
Trillo and Aerobo considered many different drones and cameras for the project,
including Aerobo’s own proprietary Aerobo X8 Drone, however, the team settled on the
DJI Inspire X5.
“The Inspire X5 was brand new when we shot this, over a year ago,” said
Brian Streem, Founder and CEO of Aerobo, “but it was the perfect platform because it
struck the right balance of flight time, size, noise and camera specs. Drones unlock
untold creative potential for filmmakers like Paul.”
While the film represents a technical filmmaking achievement, Trillo did not sacrifice
story, production value, or acting for technology. “I wanted to tell a story first. We pushed
drone technology to help tell that story, not the other way around. It was amazing to see
how well the drone operators were able to follow the 3D animatic I created with Cinema
4D.”
“Aerobo has more experience filming drone footage for movies and TV than any other
company in the world,” said Streem. “We shoot live sports for major networks, we film on
the most high-energy high-stakes film sets in the world, but this project was an entirely
new test that our team rose to meet.”
