About the Organisation

The Authority is a Crown entity, responsible for the safety and security of New Zealand’s civil aviation system. The Authority has two business arms – the security arm (the Aviation Security Service) which provides aviation security services at airports across New Zealand and the regulatory arm, which is responsible for the safety oversight of the civil aviation system.

About the role

The Special Flight Operations & Recreational Aviation Unit is responsible for regulatory oversight of the New Zealand unmanned aircraft, adventure and recreational aviation sectors. As our Flight Operations Inspector specialising in Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS), you will be involved in the safety oversight of unmanned aircraft operators, to ensure that they have embedded safety standards and are actively managing their operational risks. In addition, you will be involved in safety education and promotion, spot-checks and investigations.

This role will give you the opportunity to positively influence and improve aviation safety performance by working closely with operators to promote safe practices. You will be required to exercise sound judgement and responsibility within an established operating framework. You will play a crucial part in providing technical guidance regarding unmanned aircraft and act as a specialist advisor on matters relating to the evolution and operation of RPAS internally and externally.

Skills and experience

To be successful in this role we are looking for a licensed pilot with substantial technical skill and experience in a broad range of aviation sectors, ideally in the unmanned aircraft sector. It is desirable that you have working knowledge of the operational standards, procedures and administrative requirements specifically relating to RPAS and experience in the application of formal risk management systems. You will be able to bring your operational knowledge and experience and apply this to your work at the Authority.

You will have excellent interpersonal skills and work closely with internal and external stakeholders to provide clear and objective advice, and both make and assist with decisions about safety issues. You will be respected by others for your integrity, professionalism and aviation experience and be passionate about improving safety performance in the New Zealand aviation environment. Your systems thinking approach combined with your ability to think critically and solve problems will be of benefit in your day to day work.

In return you will be given the opportunity to work in a great team. You will be challenged, stretched and rewarded. You will make a very real contribution to aviation safety across a diverse range of operators within the General Aviation sector.
