Bucks New University appoints new Director of Aviation, Events & Tourism

Buckinghamshire New University has appointed Dr David Warnock-Smith as Director of Aviation, Events & Tourism.

Dr Warnock-Smith says he is aiming to further strengthen his new department’s links with industry, its partnership work and its work in applied research.

He was previously Programme Leader for BSc (Hons) Air Transport and Logistics Management at the University of Huddersfield and has a background in airport ground handling, tourism management in the Caribbean, and UK rail planning at Network Rail.

Dr Warnock-Smith said: “The Department of Aviation, Events & Tourism is well-renowned nationally for producing good, industry-relevant degree programmes and I want to take it to the next stage of development in its recognition among aviation, tourism and events practitioners and students.”

The department holds a Gold accreditation from People 1st and Dr Warnock-Smith said he aimed to give industry an increased role in the way its courses are run, leading to increased career opportunities for graduates.

Dr Warnock-Smith added: “I am also passionate about making careers in aviation tourism and events more accessible and affordable for anyone with an interest, regardless of background, and will be working hard to ensure Bucks New University plays a key role in widening participation in what are some of the most critical jobs markets in our service-led economy.”

He will oversee degrees including BA (Hons) Airline and Airport Management; BSc (Hons) Air Transport with Commercial Pilot Training; BSc (Hons) Air Transport with Private Pilot Training; BA (Hons) International Tourism Management with Air Travel; and BA (Hons) International Travel and Tourism Management.

Pilot graduates from Bucks New University are employed in a variety of roles, including as first officers with British Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways, easyJet, Ryanair, and Thomson Airways.

Other graduates are instructors with training partners of the University including CTC Aviation, CAE Oxford Aviation Academy; Booker Aviation and FTA Global.
