Canadian Unmanned Aircraft Systems Competition, Coast to Coast Sign Up

Students from Canadian Universities are flocking in impressive numbers to the 2017 Unmanned Systems Canada Student UAS Competition. A total of 16 teams from New Brunswick to BC have registered for the event. First time competitors from Calgary and Windsor, will add excitement and new input to this 9 th annual challenge.

The use of UAS for wildlife monitoring is becoming common place particularly in Canada’s vast remote landscape. This year’s scenario tasks each “company” to use their UAS to locate and census nests of three different types of geese. In addition, nesting samples are required to test for pesticides in the environment by retrieving eggs from the nests of the birds under study. A written report on the findings is submitted to the judges upon the completion of the flights.

The competition is designed to attract both fixed and rotary wing UAS. Will one platform have an advantage? Will there be a unique solution? Each year the bar is raised to attract first class teams with innovative ideas, thanks to the enthusiasm and support from past sponsors. This world class event provides opportunities for the best and brightest to display leadership, problem solving and team work all in a stressful competitive environment; a real-life job interview. Results have paid off as a number of UAS competitors have been hired by a sponsoring company.

Once again Centre d’Excellence sur les Drone CED Alma, Quebec will open its doors to host the competition 28 – 30 April 2017. This thriving community, north of Quebec City features an airport, drone testing facilities, large hangar space and group accommodation that promotes late night discussions and collaborating on ideas.

The competition is designed and judged by a dedicated group of Unmanned Systems Canada experts, and supported by local volunteers and industry sponsors. Through various student activities, the association is helping to foster greater success in the future of Canadian UAS industry.
