Aptonomy, Inc., a robotics start-up based in the San Francisco Bay Area, demonstrated its prototype drone for securing large properties at ISC West, one of the largest annual security trade shows. Aptonomy drones are smart and fully autonomous; they are able to respond to alarms within seconds while flying around obstacles without user intervention.

Aptonomy is leading the drone revolution in the physical security industry. Enabling drones to fly fast and safe close to ground structures is a difficult technical challenge, and Aptonomy is uniquely positioned to deliver.

We are thrilled to share the initial prototype of our security drone with the industry at ISC West this year,” said Mihail Pivtoraiko, Aptonomy co-founder. “We are able to leverage over 25 years of robotics research and development expertise, combined, to bring this cutting-edge drone solution to the security marketplace.”

Aptonomy’s security drones are designed for alarm verification and deterrence. An alarm triggered on the property automatically dispatches a drone to investigate and deliver immediate video verification of the situation. Each drone is also equipped with lights and loudspeakers to deter intruders.

The company was founded by two Carnegie Mellon robotics PhDs with a passion to leverage cutting-edge robotics technology for the peace of mind of property owners. “What separates us from the competition is our advanced proprietary algorithms and robotics know-how to make our drones smart, safe and user-friendly,” said Siddharth Sanan, Aptonomy co-founder.

Aptonomy’s drones are expected to become commercially available in 2017.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulates the use of commercial drones in the US. In 2015, the FAA announced proposed rules that are expected to be applicable to commercial drones. “We will be in full FAA compliance by the time our product becomes available for initial user trials,” added Dr. Pivtoraiko.
