The owner of a mystery drone spotted hovering near Domain Stadium during the Eagles preliminary final clash on Saturday night says he did not breach any air safety regulations.

The sight of the unmanned helicopter had Channel 7’s commentary team speculating that the “spy in the sky” might have been put up by Hawthorn to keep watch on their grand final opponents.

But it turned out the drone had instead been hired by rival Channel 9 to capture vision of the ground.

Strict rules govern commercial drone usage, especially around crowded sporting venues.

But Colin Bartley from Sky Pixels said the rules were observed at all times and the drone did not come within 200m of the ground.

A Nine spokeswoman initially denied that the drone had been hired by the station but later admitted it was capturing images for a promotional shoot.
