South African RPAS training organisation to face investigation.

Speaking today at the Durban South African Civil Aviation Authority RPAS (Part 101) Regulations workshop, Durban, Kirsty Barker, inspector flight operations Part 141 stated that a company that has commenced RPAS training in South Africa is currently under investigation by the SACAA legal department.

At this point of time there are no approved RPAS Air Training Organisations in South Africa.
It was noted by program director, Zia Meer that prospective drone pilots could seek training overseas subject to it being approved as suitable by the SACAA.

Captain Eric Mataba confirmed that six Remote Pilots Licences have been issued but would not confirm or deny, that his offices required the examiner to have previous military experience.

The South African Civil Aviation authority has started well in its efforts to regulate RPAS in South Africa. Lets hope that now its moving from a working group to the halls of power at the SACAA that it does not get bogged down in bureaucracy and over regulation.
