Handing drone controls to teenagers to inspire new generation of engineers

A future in engineering could be calling GSCE students after they paid a visit to a pioneering aviation company.
The group of 20 teenagers, who are studying engineering and product design at Sharnbrook Upper School and Community College, went to Bedford-based drone company, Blue Bear.
The business, known in the aviation industry for being pioneers of autonomy and unmanned drones, invited the student to see if they had what it takes to work in such a fast-paced sector.
15-year-old pupil, Eliza, said she may now be looking to pursue a career in product design.
She said: “I really enjoyed watching the drones fly and studying product design. The whole day has been really inspiring; it’ll give me a lot of ideas for my coursework!”
With thousands of real flight miles between them, Blue Bear employees took turns to explain their unique engineering and design roles to the students, before giving them the opportunity to control the company’s target-tracking drone, Blackstart.
They then created their own flying machines with just a sheet of A4 paper and Blu-Tack.
Blue Bear chief executive Dr Yoge Patel said: “This group could the next generation of future engineers and product designers.
“Our industry moves at an incredible pace, which means that introducing youngsters to the industry and engaging with them on a level which will help them decide whether the role is right for them is crucial at this age.”
He added: “Engineering is a predominantly male-based sector, so it is pleasing to see a number of females at Sharnbrook that are interested in both engineering and product design.”
The company offers students studying at a higher education level the chance to do an internship, with a number of interns passing through the ranks already.
