A drones venture started by two former army captains and a British Airways pilot has raised £2.5m in venture capital to expand its team and international client base.

Sky Futures, which uses unmanned aircraft to inspect offshore and onshore oil rigs for some of the world’s mining giants, has rustled up the cash from MMC Ventures. the venture capital firm behind the likes of Alex and Alexa and Pact Coffee. The fundraiser is thought to be the largest early-stage investment into a European drones business to date.

The five-year-old company, which has clients like BP, Chevron and BG Group, sends drones to gather data from oil platforms which is used by its engineers to compile technical reports.
