Cox’s Stack legend debunked by drone
It is a Dundee myth which has survived for generations.
But, using the latest technology, a city man has debunked the legend that it is possible to drive a horse and cart round the ledge of Cox’s Stack.
He made the discovery while filming the famous Lochee jute mill tower with a drone.
“I’ve heard a lot of people say the stack was so wide you were able to fit a horse and cart on the ledge of it and drive round it,” said 31-year-old Dale Summerton, of Kirkton.
“So I thought I’d go and see if the myth was true and it turns out I proved it was wrong.”
The owner of computer repair company 3000rpm filmed every angle of the stack on Easter Sunday — including the crucial shot that quashes the myth.
It was through his Facebook page, Rising Views, that Dale was asked to film the 86-metre chimney.
“I’ve filmed quite a lot of landmarks in Dundee and posted them on Facebook and YouTube.
“I had to wait for a very calm day to get that high in the air, and the weather on Sunday was ideal to get that kind of altitude.
“It was quite amazing to see. There’s never enough room up there for a horse and cart. A man could definitely walk around it though.”
Dale has filmed many city landmarks since receiving his drone as a Christmas gift and said making the videos gives him more of an insight into his city’s history.
“This just started off as a hobby at first — I didn’t even ask for a drone for Christmas,” he said.
“But when I started to film landmarks and posting them online, loads of people started watching them and commenting.
“I don’t really have history in mind when I’m doing these videos, but it is interesting looking into the landmarks’ history.”
