Professor Darryll Pines to Join Aurora Board
Aurora Flight Sciences announced today that Dr. Darryll J. Pines has been elected to the Aurora Board of Directors.
Pines has been Dean of the A. James Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland since January 2009. He also serves as the Nariman Farvardin Professor of Aerospace Engineering. Prior to his appointment as Dean, he had been Chair of the Department of Aerospace Engineering since 2006, having begun teaching at the Clark School in 1995.
During Pines’s tenure at the Clark School, the profile and budget of the institution has increased markedly, and the school is currently ranked 16th worldwide by the Academic Ranking of World Universities. His success in leading the Department of Aerospace Engineering was noted by the U.S. News and World Report graduate school rankings, which ranked the department 8th among U.S. universities and 5th among public schools.
Pines’s research focuses on the guidance, navigation, and control of unmanned aerospace vehicles.
“Dr. Pines is universally recognized as a leading expert on unmanned aircraft systems,” said Aurora Chairman John S. Langford. “His expertise and insight will prove invaluable to Aurora as the company develops the next generation of UAS technology.”
Pines is a fellow of the Institute of Physics, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and has received an NSF CAREER Award. He majored in mechanical engineering at the University of California, Berkeley and went on to earn an M.S. and subsequently a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
