University of Canterbury PhD Scholarship

Thanks very much to Edwin Hayes for letting us know about this one.

The position is based at the University of Canterbury, in Christchurch, New Zealand. The scholarship will be funded through the NZ Ministry of Science and Innovation, and will in all likelihood be along the lines of a NZ$30,000pa tax-free stipend, plus cover of course fees.

There might be some requirements regarding residency etc, but I don’t have that information. The project itself will involve the development of a UAV for some industrial inspection work.

Specifically, this position will be responsible for the development of a computer vision system which allows real-time localization of the vehicle with respect to the infrastructure under inspection; localization will need to be extremely reliable and accurate to on the order of centimetres at ranges on the order of metres. There is also the possibility of also doing other environment sensing, or condition assessment of the infrastructure, but reliable localization is the crux of the matter.

The PhD candidate would be working in collaboration between the Dept of Mechanical Engineering, the Dept of Computer Science, the National ICT Innovation Institute, plus a commercial sponsor.

So what we are looking for is someone with a Bachelors or Masters degree in engineering, computer science or something similarly relevant. The candidate will need to have excellent communications skills, be able to work both individually and with a highly integrated team, and ‘that kind of thing’.
