Univ. of Hartford researching new aerial vehicles

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Hartford has received a $2.4 million federal grant to help the U.S. Army develop the next generation of small, unmanned flying vehicles.

University officials say the goal will be to create an aerial vehicle about the size of a soda can that would provide video and audio surveillance, mark targets and detect gases, radiation, explosives and other dangers.

The University of Hartford is leading a coalition of colleges and businesses that is developing the technology. Those taking part include the University of Connecticut, the University of Bridgeport and the Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology Inc.

Officials say the $2.4 million grant is one of the largest ever given to the University of Hartford.
