Army News Service|by Skip Vaughn REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. — Uganda air force Pvt. Ronald Mudhasi locked his arm as instructed and flung the small remote-controlled airplane into the overcast sky. The Raven flew majestically above Test Area 3 but Mudhasi’s work wasn’t finished. He joined his countrymen and their instructors under a nearby canopy to help control the unmanned aircraft system’s flight. Eight members of the Uganda air force received training on the Raven Dec. 12-23. The Uganda defense forces purchased four of the systems in July for $3 million, according to logistics management specialist Cindy Vanburg of AMCOM’s Security Assistance Management Directorate The Uganda servicemembers, in two groups of four, received instruction on their country’s new systems, which would be delivered in January after the training. The instructors were from Rally Point Management, out of Fort Walton Beach, Fla. “I like it,” Mudhasi said of the Raven. “It’s interesting, very interesting.” “It’s good,” Capt. Patrick Kubayo said. “It’s a good … support of our operations in Somalia. Very necessary. The instructors they’re professional. They know what they’re doing. They help us a lot.” Said Lance Cpl. Rowland Jimmy Odoch, “It is good. It will help us in our service [...]

Air Force to equip Security Forces with Raven systems AeroVironment, Inc. today announced that it received a $6,874,175 firm-fixed-price order from the U.S. Air Force under an existing contract with the U.S. Army. The order comprises new digital Raven(R) small unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and initial spares packages. The systems and spares packages are scheduled for delivery within the next several months. The Air Force Security Forces plan to employ Raven systems to enhance situational awareness and security at bases worldwide. This initial order will provide systems for training of Air Force personnel to support broader deployment. “Real-time aerial video from small unmanned aircraft systems has proven invaluable to warfighters on the battlefield, and can similarly benefit Security Forces at Air Force bases,” said Tom Herring, AeroVironment senior vice president and general manager, Unmanned Aircraft Systems. “For a fraction of the cost of larger unmanned aircraft systems, Raven, Puma and Wasp systems deliver situational awareness directly to the troops who need it, helping them operate more effectively and saving lives. With our customers looking for ways to do more with much less, small UAS provide tremendous value at a relatively low cost.” The Raven unmanned aircraft is a 4.2-pound, backpackable, hand-launched [...]

A foreign national is expected to plead guilty on Thursday to buying a military spy plane and then trying to resell it on eBay. Henson Chua is scheduled for a hearing Thursday, the Tampa Tribune reports, and according to court documents is expected to plead guilty to illegally importing an unmanned spy plane into the U.S., and then trying to auction it off on eBay. In March, Chua was indicted and charged by a grand jury in Tampa with violating the Arms Export Control Act and smuggling, after he imported an RQ-11B “Raven” Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) from the Philippines into the U.S. The Raven is listed on the U.S. munitions list as a defensive item, and U.S. law forbids people from buying and selling defense equipment without permission from the government. According to the indictments, in May 2010, the Department of Defense learned that a “Raven” had been listed on eBay for $13,000. They determined that it belonged to the U.S. government, and an agent of Homeland Security Investigations began to correspond with the seller, posing as a potential buyer. Over the course of several months, the two corresponded about selling the plane, and also discussed how best to smuggle it out of [...]

6/6/2011 By Sgt. Matt Lyman , Black Sea Rotational Force Recently, U.S. Marines and soldiers with Black Sea Rotational Force 11 travelled to Buzau, Romania to provide the Romanian army a familiarization course to display the capabilities of the Raven-B, unmanned aerial vehicle. This familiarization course was presented over five days and was split between classroom lectures and practical application exercises, where Romanian soldiers were given some stick time on the Raven system. The Raven is classified as a SUAV (Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicle), operates at a maximum service ceiling of 10,500 feet and each unit costs about $36,000; which is a small price to pay for the immense advantage the Raven system can generate on the battlefield. “It’s a reconnaissance bird, once it’s in the air we can achieve a certain altitude where people on the ground can’t see it above and we can loiter over them and see what they’re doing, see if they’re friend or foe and give a view of the battlefield before we get there,” said U.S. Army SSgt. Stephen Provence, Raven operator. “It has night and day capabilities, so we can see white hot or black hot. It’s easy to pick up signatures from above [...]

(Reuters) The United States will provide Pakistan with 85 small “Raven” drone aircraft, a U.S. military official told Reuters on Thursday, a key step to meeting Islamabad’s calls for access to U.S. drone technology. The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, declined to disclose the cost or model of the non-lethal, short-range aircraft, which are manufactured by the U.S.-based AeroVironment Inc (Reporting by Phil Stewart) The RQ-11B Raven UAV is launched by hand, thrown into the air like a free flight model airplane. The Raven lands itself by auto-piloting to a pre-defined landing point and then performing a near-vertical (1 foot down for every 1 foot forward) “Autoland” descent. The UAV can provide day or night aerial intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance.     Bookmark It Hide Sites $$('div.d5250').each( function(e) { e.visualEffect('slide_up',{duration:0.5}) });

By Staff Sgt. Kyle Richardson, 41st Fires Brigade, PAO FORT HOOD, Texas — It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s actually both, sort of. Soldiers from the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division and the 41st Fires Brigade re-certified on the Army’s smallest unmanned aerial vehicle, the Raven RQ-11B. The master Raven trainers from the 41st Fires Brigade trained with Rail Gunner Raven operators and several of 2nd BCT Raven operators to re-certify and obtain more Raven flight time during the two-day re-certification course at House Creek Urban Assault Range located on Fort Hood, Texas, March 10-11. The 41st Fires Bde. currently maintains the only two master Raven trainers on Fort Hood. “I think the Raven is one of the greatest forewarning systems the Army has produced,” said Staff Sgt. Josh Frana, a master Raven trainer with Battery B, 1st Battalion, 20th Field Artillery Regiment. “It’s fairly easy to operate. It’s almost like a video game.” The Raven is a small hand-launched aircraft powered by a small motor that resembles a remote control plane with a fail-safe design to fall apart in several pieces during the landing. However, the Raven is equipped with a few additional upgrades and a ground [...]

COVENAS, Sucre, Colombia | U.S. Marines from a Security Cooperation Task Force (SCTF) held a tactical unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) subject matter expert exchange (SMEE) with Colombian marines from Colombian counter intelligence aboard the Colombian Marine Infantry Training Base, Feb. 2. The SCTF is embarked aboard USS Gunston Hall (LSD 44) in support of Amphibious Southern Partnership Station 2011 (A-SPS 11) in the U.S. Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM) area of responsibility to strengthen ties with regional partner nations. The A-SPS concept is dedicated to building relationships, interoperability, and improving each participating country’s capabilities. The exchange consisted of an overview of the Raven RQ11 system’s capability, basic information about the Raven, and a hands-on flight demonstration. The Raven is a mobile, lightweight but tough, user-friendly observation information system. It takes ten minutes to setup, weighs approximately 4.2 lbs, and has a wingspan of 51 inches. “The Raven is meant for smaller units, and is typically used for reconnaissance missions,” said U.S. Marine Cpl. Christopher J. Maharg, Raven subject matter expert. “It is a great tool because it shoots ‘live-view’ video.” The Raven can remain in flight for approximately 80 minutes, and collects live-feed video data in both color and infrared.
