Turkey is expecting the delivery of Predators in June 2012, the Turkish defense minister said a day after the country’s prime minister announced that Turkey has agreed with the US on a deal involving the transfer of US-engineered unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that could prove crucial in combating terrorism. “We have agreed in principle [on the delivery of Predators]. Negotiations will continue,” Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was quoted as saying by the Cihan news agency on Saturday in New York, where the Turkish leader was visiting on the occasion of the 66th session of the UN General Assembly. Erdoğan also noted that Turkey had offered to either purchase or lease the drones and that the two countries were still settling the details regarding the delivery of the Predators. Following up on the agreement, Turkish Defense Minister İsmet Yılmaz told reporters on Saturday that the drones to be received from the US would be delivered to the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) in June of next year, reported the Anatolia news agency. “These [Predators] are UAVs with better qualities and features than the Herons,” Yılmaz said, and added that the Turkish-made Anka would also be ready for the TSK around [...]

WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio – The Air Force accepted MQ-1 Predator tail number 268, the final MQ-1 manufactured for the service, in a ceremony March 3. Col. James Beissner, the chief of Air Combat Command’s Irregular Warfare Division, accepted the aircraft on behalf of the Air Force. “This event marks a milestone in Air Force history given the path this aircraft took from conception to operational excellence,” said Col. Christopher Coombs, the chief of the Aeronautical Systems Center’s Medium Altitude Unmanned Aircraft Systems Division. “The Predator is a great example of the Air Force’s response to an immediate warfighter need.” Since its first flight in July 1994, the MQ-1 series has accumulated over 900,000 flight hours and maintained a fleet fully mission capable rate over 90 percent, making it one of the warfighter’s most valuable assets, Colonel Coombs said. The MQ-1 is a medium-altitude, long-endurance, remotely piloted aircraft. Its primary missions are close air support, air interdiction, and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance. It acts as a joint forces air component commander-owned theater asset for reconnaissance, surveillance and target acquisition in support of the joint forces commander.
AFP reporting a Predator down via Emirates 24/7 Published Tuesday, February 08, 2011 A suspected US spy drone crashed near the south Yemen town of Loder on Tuesday, a police official said, as witnesses said Al-Qaeda forces made off with the plane’s wreckage. The drone crashed in Jahayn village near Loder, in Yemen’s Abyan province where Al-Qaeda has a strong presence, and was found by local residents, the official told AFP. Witnesses told AFP that Al-Qaeda forces were able to seize what remained of the drone. The police official said the drone was a Predator, which are used for reconnaissance but can also be armed with missiles. The US military has widely used Predator drones in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said he believed the drone was “monitoring the movements of Al-Qaeda partisans, who have a strong presence” in Loder. Government forces and alleged Al-Qaeda militants fought a pitched battle in Loder in late August. According to an AFP tally based on official and medical sources, at least 33 people — 19 militants, 11 soldiers, and three civilians — were killed in the fighting. The Washington Post reported in November that President Barack Obama’s [...]

US unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) manufacturer General Atomics has prescribed South African lubricant oil for the MQ1 Predator and MQ9 Reaper (pictured). Torco says it did not at first know that it SR-5 lubricant was being exclusively used in the UAVs engines. Torco Managing Director Frank Barlow says the lubricant has been used in all Reaper and Predator UAV engines for over 12 years. “The … manufacturer tested oils from all over the world and found Torco oils to be the best protecting their drone engines in all types of weather and conditions – hot desserts, the cold climate of high altitudes and humid environments,” Barlow said. “The manufacturer was purchasing the SR-5 products from the marketplace. Then they came to visit us some years later to confirm that Torco has a good quality control and the capacity to supply their expanding need of more SR-5 products. Now they are purchasing directly from Torco to open up a direct communication for their need. They also have been using Torco Engine Assembly Lube products to assemble the engines,” Balow added. “Both Torco SR-5 and Torco Engine Assembly Lube have been two of the most dependable products for the multi-million dollar drone.
Officials with the Holloman 49th Wing continue today their investigation of an unmanned MQ-1 Predator crash on landing around 1:20 p.m. Friday 22nd October 2010. This is the second crash of an unmanned MQ-1 Predator at Holloman. Holloman public affairs spokesperson Arlan Ponder said the Predator went off the runway on landing. “It went off of the side of the runway,” Ponder said. “It was returning from a training mission. We really don’t have much detail right now. The Accident Investigation Board is investigating the accident.” He said no one was injured in the accident and no private property was damaged. “The Accident Investigation Board is under the direction of the Air Combat Command,” Ponder said. “AIB is comprised of members selected at random from other Air Force bases to investigate the incident and find the cause of the accident.” Ponder said the cause of the September 2009 crash of an unmanned Predator at Holloman was “mechanical.” “It had crashed into a fence during a training mission,” he said. Holloman Air Force Base has about 10 unmanned MQ-1 Predators as part of the 49th Wing training mission. The unmanned MQ-1 Predator has an estimated cost of $4.5 million a piece.
