The Ballarat Linux conference also sported a high altitude balloon launch. CanberraUAV will be using the Ardupilot autopilot from DIYdrones and have already added some handy features for anyone considering using this autopilot for the OBC. Geo Fencing was added just before Christmas. In September 2012 the CanberraUAV team will try to rescue ‘Outback Joe’ as part of the UAV outback challenge. This talk is all about the technology and techniques that we have developed for building an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) that can search for and find a lost bushwalker in outback Australia. Bookmark It Hide Sites $$('div.d11376').each( function(e) { e.visualEffect('slide_up',{duration:0.5}) });

The international $50,000 prize UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) Challenge – Outback Rescue competition held in approved airspace at Kingaroy, Queensland, will become a biennial event from 2011. Challenge co-founder and ARCAA director, QUT’s Professor Rod Walker said the changes were being made to the Challenge to give search and rescue teams more time to gain autonomous flight experience and more high school teams the chance to enter. The UAV Challenge comprises the Airborne Delivery Challenge for high school students, which will remain an annual event, and the Search and Rescue Challenge for tertiary institutions and enthusiasts, which will now be held every two years. Search and Rescue Challenge – open entry The Search and Rescue Challenge has attracted 175 domestic and international teams who compete to deliver water by UAV to ‘Outback Joe’ for a $50,000 reward, since its launch in 2007. The new long-lead format is expected to boost competition entries by allowing more time for unmanned aircraft development and testing. “We do not want the winner to be the only team to drop a water bottle to Outback Joe. We want to have multiple teams closely competing for the grand prize. We would love to measure the closest [...]

The 2010 Outback Challenge sUAS competition held at Kingaroy Queensland continues to attract media attention. Well done the organisers. This month its featured in airline Qantas in flight magazine, The Australian Way. One wonders just how many people will read about sUAS for the first time. Rumours fly around enthusiast forums about a new tougher format for the 2011 event. No doubt greater autonomy and a trickier to find target. Will Outback Joe be put out to pasture? Already looking forward to following the 2011 event online.
In an article by Jane Symonds in Aviation Business Asia Pacific the leap forward made by competitors in this years competition was noted and Phil Presgrave of CASA made some interesting comments. Its interesting to watch developments being made by countries like Australia and the UK with the USA just about to leave the starting blocks. Will the USA be strongly influenced by what is becoming best industry practice elsewhere?? CASA’s UAS specialist Phil Presgrave told ABM that future-proofing regulations was made complex by the rapidity of technology development, including ‘strong autonomy’ – fully autonomous vehicles making their own decisions and excluding humans from the system – and the potential introduction of ‘optionally piloted’ aircraft. In partnership, industry and CASA are also developing a range of competencies that will fit into the national training framework to provide qualifications and potentially licensing for UAS operations, as well as working towards development of UAV airworthiness certifications. CASA currently requires prospective UAV pilots to complete the aviation theory exam components of the Private Pilot Licence (PPL), but Presgrave said that both CASA and industry saw that system as “not the optimum”. “We’re working with industry to develop a range of competencies that will [...]

An eventful drive to the Outback Challenge for Scott and Ian, sadly there troubles continued and the were not able to fly in this years competition. Joe’s just going to have to keep waiting. In their own words. Melbourne UAV is once again entering the Open Search and Rescue challenge section of the 2011 Australian Outback UAV Challenge. After getting very close in 2009 and not so close in 2010 we just had to come back! The location for the 2011 Challenge is yet to be announced but there is a rumour that it could be interstate this year, hopefully in Victoria ! That would be great, we might have to attend if only for the VB. Bookmark It Hide Sites $$('div.d2272').each( function(e) { e.visualEffect('slide_up',{duration:0.5}) });

Well, the dust has settled on the competition now and we made it home after a very long drive from Kingaroy. Well done to UND and Robota, a great effort from both teams to get as far as they did. Unbelievably, they were the only two teams that flew in the S&R competition this year; Joe was nearly rescued, so close but not quite. We have been analysing our FDR data and are working on the reasons we didn’t do as well as we had hoped. We did 3 scrutineering flights and had to abort each of them for different reasons. So we ended up not being able to continue on to the S&R flight. Our first flight showed some control issues relating to an external antenna we had to place on the wings, so we landed and adjusted what needed to be adjusted. The second flight was going well until, under autopilot, the GCS laptop started playing up. The mouse was jumping all over the screen and clicking on things that were not being selected. I had no choice but to bring the plane back and get Paul to land it. That was the end of Monday. We did [...]

I guess all the clues were there from his tweets. Interesting video that shows the scene of the drop and what the guys at Joe were up to. Especially interesting is the radio chat. Little bit disappointed that he was not hidden a little better, the white topped post and car would have stood out very well. It remains an impressive result, flying 2km and then looking within a box roughly 4x6km in size. The organisation and enthusiasm of the team running the event shines through, its the best UAS competition by far. Looking forward to seeing what happened with Team Robota.
Unmanned Aircraft Systems Engineering from North Dakota made Outback Challenge history yesterday. They were the first team ever to fly into the search area, find Joe, and deliver his water . The achievement was hard won they had difficulties on day one, from their blog. Dave passed the manual flight portion of the flights and we landed the aircraft and prepared for the autopilot flight scrutineering. We had a short delay for a crop duster to take off as the airport was being used for both Manned and Unmanned flights. We powered our system back up and much to our demise the autopilot would not connect to the ground station. We began troubleshooting this problem and were lucky enough to have the ability to contact Cloud Cap Technology. We worked as long as we could at the field to resolve the issue. We thank Matt from Cloud Cap for putting in the late night he did to help us as it was somewhere around 10:00 pm his time when we were talking with him. The event organizers decided to allow us one more chance tomorrow to complete the scrutineering. We came back to the hotel and worked for a few hours deciphering [...]
