The Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), that awed viewers in the Bollywood hit ”3 Idiots”, has been officially inducted into the paramilitary forces. The Border Security Force (BSF) and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) are using the drone, titled ‘Netra’, in counter-insurgency operations. The autonomous UAV for surveillance and reconnaissance was inducted into the paramilitary forces last month while the army, navy and several state police forces have shown a keen interest in acquiring it, say its makers. It was developed by Ideaforge Technology Pvt Ltd, a company floated by a group of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Mumbai alumni, and the Pune-based Research and Development Establishment (Engineers) laboratory of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). DRDO, after watching the 2009 Aamir Khan-starrer “3 Idiots”, tied up with IdeaForge to refine the Netra. It is designed specifically for anti-terrorist and counter-insurgency operations in forested areas. It can be used in hostage situations like the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, border infiltration monitoring, local law enforcement operations, search and rescue operations, disaster management and aerial photography. “Ten units of Netra have already been taken by the DRDO for research related works in their laboratories like Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE) in [...]

MIT, Anna University, Department of Aerospace Engineering’s Division of Avionics successfully tested the DHAKSHA- mini unmanned aircraft system (UAS), will provide the public safety and rescue operations with real-time video and stable, high-resolution imagery said Dr.K.Senthil Kumar,Project Director,Mini UAV’s. He also informed that the short-range tactical rotorcraft system can be made available immediately when first responders need it. DHAKSHA’s compact size fits in the small case or a car and is easy to launch and recover in almost any harsh environment. DHAKSHA is highly tolerant of sustained winds and wind gusts, thereby achieving stable aerial imagery through an advanced onboard control system. “ DHAKSHA will help first responders locate and identify natural and human public safety threats, keeping people out of harm’s way,” said Dr.S.Thamarai Selvi, Dean MIT. It speeds and maneuvers at the touch of a button. Operator training and workload is minimized through a streamlined design and user interface. Video imagery is transmitted to the handheld ground control station and distributed to decision makers for real-time viewing. “It fits seamlessly into public safety operations,” appreciated by Prof. Dr. P. Mannar Jawahar, Vice Chancellor, Anna University, India. MIT can provide extensive and experienced support to users because we’ve been involved [...]

BANGALORE: Flight trials of Micro and Mini Air Vehicles designed and developed to meet many requirements including countering low intensity conflicts, counter terrorism and for rescue operations during natural calamities, were conducted at Hoskote near here, DRDO said on Wednesday. These small vehicles are capable of flying in full autonomous mode and transmitting live day and night video to the portable Ground Control Station in real time, Defence Research and Development Organisation said in a statement. Aeronautical Development Establishment, a laboratory under the aegis of DRDO, conducted the flight trials on Monday. These products are developed jointly by ADE and National Aerospace Laboratories and supported by private vendors. Three Micro Air Vehicles named Black kite, Golden Hawk and Pushpak with varying sizes ranging from 300 to 450 mm with a maximum weight of 300 gms to 500 gms were flight demonstrated. These vehicles have an endurance of 30 minutes and carry a miniature daylight video camera as payload that relays the imagery of the gaming area to the GCS during its flight. The video and telemetry range is about two kms. Two mini UAVs called Imperial Eagle and Sly Bird, which are categorised under two kg class vehicles and having an [...]

BANGALORE: Lt Col V S Thapa, an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) external test pilot, hailing from Dehra Dun, will command this year’s Defence Research and Development Organisation’s (DRDO) Republic Day parade contingent in New Delhi. Thapa is presently posted on a special assignment to Bangalore-based Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) — which is also the abode of home-grown UAVs, including Nishant and Rustom. Speaking to Express from Delhi, Thapa said that it was a very esteemed occasion for him to command the unit. “It is a lifetime opportunity and I am working hard to make it a success. The rehearsals have been good and we have fine-tuned everything before the big day,” the 44-year-old Thapa said. Thapa hit the headlines after conventionally flying Rustom-1 UAV for the first time in October 2010, and so far has piloted (externally) nine flights of Rustom-1. An officer from the Regiment of Artillery of the Indian Army, Thapa is certified as an external pilot from Israeli Aerospace Industries, Malat, Israel. He is part of Army’s UAV team since 2000 and has handled Searcher Mk-I Alpha and Searcher Mk-II UAVs. DRDO sources tell Express that Thapa was selected to lead the R-Day contingent after a vigorous [...]

Yatish Yadav In the second week of December, an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) flew over the Maoist-hit areas of Dantewada district in Chhattisgarh, picking up images of village dwellings and human movement. At the National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO) control room the information was treated as a major breakthrough since the drones deployed in the area had so far failed to provide sufficient intelligence inputs The state and paramilitary forces were also convinced that the images were of a Naxal camp. An operation was immediately planned. Surprise and speed were to be the key elements The operation was to be similar in nature to the ones successfully undertaken by the US-led allied forces in Afghanistan and Pakistan. A surrendered Maoist was also quizzed to clear the doubts about the target location. Armed with the visuals provided by the Heron drone, a team of two units, comprising paramilitary was dispatched on foot to encircle and sanitize Teriwal village in Dantewada. Another 125 personnel were to be air dropped at the assembly area which was some kilometres away from the presumed Naxal camp at Teriwal, as was indicated by the footage relayed by the UAV. But on December 19, an air force [...]

Four months after the disappearance of Rajasthan nurse Bhanwari Devi, the CBI flew an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) over the area where her body is suspected to have been disposed of, scouring the terrain for any visible sign of her remains. Investigators zoomed in on the suspected area on Monday after questioning key suspect Om Prakash Bishnoi, who is learnt to have told them that his brother Bishna Ram Bishnoi got rid of Bhanwari’s body after the murder. CBI hopes that the map of the terrain generated by the UAV’s high-definition cameras will help narrow down the search field to pockets of high probability which can then be examined closely. The UAV has been supplied by a Mumbai-based private firm. This is the first time that CBI has employed such a technique in an investigation of a disappearance and possible murder. http://www.indianexpress.com/news/CBI-calls-in-UAV-in-Bhanwari-remains-hunt/895149/ Bookmark It Hide Sites $$('div.d10956').each( function(e) { e.visualEffect('slide_up',{duration:0.5}) });

BANGALORE: India is developing an umanned aerial vehicle (UAV) similar to American Predator drones with an investment of Rs 1,500 crore and planning an unmanned combat vehicles, a key official involved in the project said today. UAV Rustom-2 project is spread over 66 months, Director of Bangalore-based Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), a Defence Research and Development Organisation ( DRDO) laboratory, P S Krishnan, told PTI here. Rustom-2 would have a wing-span of 21-odd metres and an endurance of 24-hours-plus, as against seven-odd metres and 12-15 hours of Rustom-1, which has already completed five flights. ADE is the nodal lab for these projects. Rustom-2 would have new payloads such as synthetic aperture radar, maritime patrol radar and collision avoidance system, among others, he said. “With its capability and the amount of payload it can carry, it (Rustom-2) compares well with (American) Predator (drones) and other class of vehicles,” Krishnan said. The Predator is a nickname given to one in a series of UAVs, or pilotless drones, operated by the Pentagon, the CIA and, increasingly, other agencies of the US federal government such as the border patrol. Asked if India is also developing unmanned aerial combat vehicles, he said “we are thinking of that one. Some plans will be there”. [...]
