Infrared systems developer FLIR Systems (NASDAQ: FLIR; Portland, OR, USA) reports that it has delivered more than 11,000 infrared (IR) camera cores into the unmanned vehicle market. FLIR cites “increased popularity of unmanned aerial and ground vehicles” as the motivation to bring three new IR camera cores to market, which are debuting at AUVSI’s Unmanned Systems North America event this week (Aug. 16-19, 2011; Washington, DC, USA). The newly released cameras include the Tau longwave-infrared (LWIR) 320-resolution camera core, which supports unattended ground sensor systems, weapon sights, and security and surveillance systems; the Tau shortwave-infrared (SWIR) core, with a 640 x 480-pixel InGaAs focal plane array, which targeted for night-vision system design and commercial applications; and the Quark camera core that employs wafer-level packaging for the microbolometer sensor, enabling a device that measures approximately 0.5 cubic inches and weighs less than 20 g. Military and security applications have been leading the way for new developments in unmanned aerial vehicles in particular , but other emerging applications such as crop monitoring and soil analysis for agriculture, locating downed aircraft, and helping to dock satellites in space have become increasingly reliant on the autonomous technologies of unmanned systems.
OTTAWA (ON), June 30th 2011 – Sponsored by leading Unmanned Systems’ service provider ING Engineering, the Canadian University of Sherbrooke team of 6 students secured a third overall position in the 9th SUAV (Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) systems competition conducted by the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI). The competition ran from June 15th-18th at the Webster Field in Patuxent River, Maryland. The team has previously been declared the overall winner at the latest UAV Competition organized by the Unmanned Systems Canada. It further defeated over 25 teams internationally at the AUVSI Finals, coming third to the Utah State University (first) and the North Carolina University (second). Says Sebastien L. Godbout, Team Captain, VAMUdeS, “Despite few GPS problems, we managed to perform a fully successful autonomous routine i.e. takeoff, missions, and landing. Our team reacted very well when the problem arisen and throughout the mission, this was a key reason for our third place.” Notably, this win marks the highest ranking that any Canadian team has ever achieved at the AUVSI event. The AUVSI SUAV is aimed at generating interest and innovation in the UAV technology by means of a competition where the students try to model, fabricate and demonstrate [...]

The Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International is coordinating an effort to bring systems together that might be of assistance to Japan. A number of AUVSI members have inquired about information on how to offer assistance to Japan as the country deals with the crisis left by the earthquake and tsunami. The Japanese government has asked for assistance specifically for the crisis at its nuclear plant. AUVSI has been working with the U.S. State Department about this specific request. We have received the following requirements on UAS capabilities to support reactor cooling operations. The Japanese government has requested: • Remote-controlled equipment and other remote-controlled transport machinery designed for countermeasures against radiation disaster (including their specification). • Remote-controlled equipment refers to small-sized, lightweight, unmanned monitoring robots or aircraft survey systems which could be utilized, in cases of nuclear disasters, to gather monitoring information by remote control in a speedy and safe manner without the risks of radiation exposure. • Other remote-controlled transport machinery refers to unmanned trucks or helicopters that are capable of delivering goods and equipment needed in areas highly contaminated with radiation without the risks of radiation exposure. Potential solutions packages should be routed to NITOPS@nnsa.doe.gov, LIA07.HOC@nrc.gov. Please Cc taskforce-1@state.gov. If you [...]

Following hot on the heals of the AMAs action to call members to write to congress to protect the rights of aeromodellers. The Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International is asking its members to lobby for access to the NAS. The FAA must be beginning to hear the choir singing now, how will the sermon pan out? Click on the link below to send a timely and important e-mail to your Member of Congress supporting the House FAA Reauthorization Bill (HR 658), which includes provisions granting unmanned aerial systems access into the national airspace. http://www.congressweb.com/cweb2/index.cfm/siteid/AUVSI In an effort to augment the services AUVSI provides to our members, we are unveiling a web-based application to enhance the advocacy section of the AUVSI website. The Legislative Action Center provides you the opportunity to communicate and actively engage with your elected officials in Washington, DC. As calls to action surface from the Advocacy Staff relating to the unmanned systems industry, the menu driven application will provide you the opportunity to expeditiously voice your opinion. In our first call to action, we are encouraging members who have an interest in unmanned aerial systems to contact their Representative and ask them to support the FAA [...]

Misinformation, from the highest level responded to here by the AUVSI. we had heard about the comments made by Mr Babbitt during a Washington, DC chapter event of RAeS. The USA will continue to fall behind the rest of the world in the sUAS field if this attitude is allowed to prevail at the FAA. If I were in the USA I would think joining the AUVSI would be the first thing to do if I were starting an sUAS venture and wanting that activity to become legal some time soon. I’m probably going to get a wrap over the knuckles for posting this here, but I think its worth it. Once again well done AUVSI. October 27, 2010 J. Randolph Babbitt Administrator Federal Aviation Administration 800 Independence Avenue, SW Washington, DC 20591 Dear Administrator Babbitt: The Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) is the world’s largest nonprofit organization devoted exclusively to advancing the unmanned systems community. One of our primary goals has been to work with Congress and the FAA to safely integrate UAS into the National Airspace System. Over the past year we have worked collaboratively with your staff in the FAA’s Unmanned Aircraft Program Office and have held several productive discussions [...]
