Congratulations Somerset – Facebook Aquila flies

I’m from Somerset so indulge me a little! Who would have thought smelly town could have produced this! (Yes its a local reference)

Facebooks solar powered internet connectivity drone has taken one step closer to being a thing. At the end of June  it had its first flight.

Designed to fly for three month stints. In large numbers, orbiting at high altitude. Aquila could be the way I publish sUAS News from this corner of Africa in the future.

Bringing internet to parts other internet providers just don’t reach.

We’re proud to announce the successful first test flight of Aquila, the solar airplane we designed to bring internet access to people living in remote locations. This innovative plane has the wingspan of an airliner but weighs less than a small car and flies on roughly the power of three blowdryers — incredible!
