Johannesburg, South Africa based Cranfield Aviation Training today concluded their first SACAA Accredited RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems) Ground School Training course.

Rick Bosman of Cranfield Aviation Training noted:

We had 5 delegates attend the first course which was scheduled as soon as we received our CAA accreditation due to the many enquiries from our pupils. The feedback seemed very positive, with students commenting on the comprehensiveness of the material, and the clarity of the delivery by the instructors.

The duration of the Cranfield RPL (Remote Pilot License) course is 7 days, with the first 6 days being the vital RPL theoretical component, followed by day 7 which is dedicated to Radio License Certification, and English Proficiency as part of the mandatory requirements for licensing.

For existing pilots, in possession of a valid manned Pilot License (NPL, PPL, CPL or ATP), Cranfield offer a shortened version of the course where only days 1, 2 and 3 are mandatory. The course cost for existing pilots is R5 400 excluding VAT.

Their full Remote Pilot License Course costs R12 600 excluding VAT, and covers the following theoretical aspects alongside English Proficiency and Radio License Certification:

  • Rules and Regulations
  • Human Factors
  • Aerodynamics and performance
  • Construction and Parts
  • Batteries
  • Systems
  • Meteorology
  • Weight & Balance
  • Navigation
  • Flight Plans
  • Emergency procedures
  • Safety Management Services
  • Quality Assurance
  • Radio

I have personally attended many courses at Cranfield Aviation Training over the years as part of my manned aviation career including their ICAO Safety Management Systems course, Crew Resource Management, Dangerous Goods, Safety and Emergency Procedures, Fire Fighting, Aviation Medicine as well as their Hostile Environment Awareness Training course.

My experience with them over the years as a training organization has always been pleasant, with both the instructors and course content always being of the highest quality. At sUAS News we are excited to see where Cranfield takes RPAS training in South Africa over the coming years.

CIO, sUAS News | "My interest in UAS began in 2006 in the Masai Mara, Kenya where I was working as a bush pilot and met Gary Mortimer. I have always loved computers, maps, aerial photos and any kind of flying thing so the UAS addiction quickly took hold. Since then my interest in these technologies has grown from just an interest to building and flying small UAS as well as getting involved with sUAS News."
