Ohio UAS leaders wary of drone registratation

While the Department of Transportation is moving ahead quickly with an idea to make drone operators register their craft with the government, Ohio’s emerging UAS industry has been more skeptical.

The DOT announced this week it’s forming a task force to explore a system for drone registration ahead of the busy holiday season, as the industry estimates up to 1 million recreational drones will be sold to customers by the end of the year. This comes in tandem with efforts to regulate commercial use of drones, which the Federal Aviation Administration has delayed several times.

“Adding the additional requirement of registration may have the effect of making novice drone pilots feel more responsible for their actions,” said Matt Mishak of the Northern Ohio Unmanned Aircraft Systems Association, which has been pushing drone development in the Cleveland area. “However, it is questionable that registration will help authorities identify dangerous drone operators”
