Owner of Milton Keynes drone business believes technology will become ‘prevalent’

A photographer from Kingsmead, Milton Keynes, who has launched a drone-based business offering aerial filming and photography, believes the technology will become ‘prevalent’ in the near future.

Matt Thompson, 25, from Pembridge Grove, launched Aerios Media in July and offers to cover a variety of events including action sports and weddings.

Having been a photographer since 2008, Matt decided to invest thousands of pounds into his DJI drone and training as he believes the technology will become increasingly important.

He said: “I started out as an event and gigs photographer, taking pictures of friends’ bands.

“My business has been in the making for quite a while. This seemed the logical next step so I could cover land, sea and air.

“I’m very aware of the developments with autonomous technologies and I know it will make a huge breakthrough in the near future. I think that drones will become more prevalent soon.”

Even though civilian use of drones is a relatively new phenomenon, there are already a number of regulations in place dictating where they can be used. Currently, pilots can’t fly within 150 metres of a congested area or more than 400ft vertically.

Although the business is still young, Matt has already covered a wedding at Horwood House and will soon be travelling to Greece to film parkour runners for a commercial.

The 25-year-old is excited by the possibilities of drone-based filming and photography, and hopes to see others follow his lead – provided they receive the right training.

He added: “I’m trying to get the business off the ground and I can do anything from weddings to car commercials.

“Ideally, I would like to work with action sports – something where I can track exciting movements like free running and rally driving. Anything which can get me to travel too would be exciting.”
