Resource Group’s Unmanned Flying Services team selected by Network Rail to help reduce line closures and safeguard engineers

Resource Group’s Unmanned Aviation Flying Services team has been awarded a place on the national framework agreement by Network Rail for a three year contract to provide aerial infrastructure inspections and surveys. The use of remotely piloted unmanned aviation systems should help to increase inspection efficiencies and reduce the risks associated with rail engineers working at height and in busy rail environments.

The award of the contract means Resource Group is now an authorised operator of unmanned aviation systems on the rail network and will be called upon by Network Rail to give rail engineers live video and stills for onsite analysis.

It’s not the first time Resource Group has provided imagery to Network Rail. After a landslip at Hatfield Colliery, South Yorkshire, the flying services team flew unmanned vehicles over the site to enhance situational awareness by providing engineers an aerial view of the twisted tracks from a safe distance.

Chris Thomas, Service Delivery Manager for Resource Group’s Unmanned Aviation Flying Services team said: “The award of the contract is a significant step in helping Network Rail to increase efficiency in maintaining its assets and minimise disruption to UK commuters and travellers.

“Our work with Network Rail also takes significant steps in safeguarding the men and women who work on the rail network.”

The team at Resource Group will provide ongoing support to Network Rail in developing its safety policies and procedures required to operate unmanned air systems on the rail network.

Network Rail runs, maintains and develops Britain’s rail tracks, signalling, bridges, tunnels, level crossings, viaducts and 18 stations.

Resource Group is one of four suppliers to be awarded the contract.
