NWS uses drone to confirm tornado damage in Scott Co.

SCOTT COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) – The National Weather Service used a drone to help identify tornado damage in Scott County on Wednesday. They say an EF-1 tornado is to blame for damage near Stamping Ground. Some homes had their whole porch ripped off. Other buildings suffered only minor damage.
The Turner’s home was among the most damaged in Stamping Ground. The side porch was ripped off and thrown across a field by the tornado’s powerful winds. Their roof was partially ripped off. They’ll have to use a tarp to cover it until it can be repaired.
“It was down by that truck, I guess, coming toward me I said ‘That’s a tornado.’ By the time I turned around, it had done what it had done,” says James Turner.
Power has been restored after power lines were knocked down during Tuesday’s storm.
The Emergency Management Director says that surveying the damage didn’t take them very long because they used a drone. The drone is a video camera that flew over the damage. The drone belongs to a captain at the Scott County Fire Department.
“We were able to get a good overview of everything from the sky which really helped because when you’re walking, you can’t see the forest through the trees. So when you’re up in the air, you can obviously see a lot. You can see the true path of the storm,” Jack Donovan, Scott County’s EMA Director, said.
The Emergency Management Director tells us that the path of the tornado in Stamping Ground seems to be about two miles long.
