Students compete in UAS challenge

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — Teams of high school students put their unmanned aerial vehicles to the test for Destination: Dayton High School UAS Challenge at Sinclair Community College Saturday.

During the daylong three part competition, students will demonstrate how the unmanned vehicle they designed and built can deliver mail and freight to customers. Students will navigate their custom quadcopters through a replica of downtown Dayton.

“The purpose of the competition is to develop civic and commercial awareness of unmanned systems, which enhance the students’ ability to apply lessons they’ve learned about science, technology, engineering, and math in the classroom,” said Rebecca Cantrell, Executive Director of Ohio Robotics.

Throughout the day there will be special presentations and guest speakers, as well as activities for the public, including flight simulators and 3D printing demonstrations.

The event is free and anyone is welcome to come and watch the competition.

Awards will be handed out at 4 p.m.

Destination: Dayton is the nation’s first Ohio Robotics high school competition for unmanned aerial systems.
