Drone gets close-up look at $24 million yacht engulfed in flames
Go ahead and stare.
A 112-foot yacht erupted in flames at a shipyard in Chula Vista, Calif. near San Diego, and sent large plumes of thick, black smoke into the air.
The intense fire broke out Thursday morning on the Polar Bear, which, according to ABC 10 News, is a pleasure yacht under repair after a winter trip to Costa Rica. About 100 workers had to evacuate the marina where yachts are built and repaired. No one was seriously hurt, but two workers suffered smoke inhilation.
“This is any boater’s worst nightmare,” Kurt Roll wrote after capturing the fire with his drone. “It doesn’t matter if you have money or not, a boat fire is devastating if you love your boat.”
Roll saw the smoke while out on his boat and sent up the drone to check it out and came away with some incredible, up-close footage. For those of you curious, Roll used a DJI Phantom quadcopter.
The yacht, which is worth $24 million, belonged to a 79-year-old retired electrical engineer named Larry Jodsass, who told NBC 7 San Diego that he’s not angry, but did cry when he saw the video.
“Anger is not the right word. It was my toy, my wonderful, beautiful piece of equipment,” he said. “I think it’s the most beautiful boat that ever has been built.”
