LLANBEDR airfield has been approved for testing Formula One vehicles.

The Federation Internationale de l’Automobile has approved the site for straight line testing for Formula One racing cars following a recommendation by the Motor Sport Association.

The airfield was recommended due to its long runways set within a secure environment as well as its workshop and events centre.

The approval means that Formula One teams can now carry out straight line testing at a premier facility within the UK. David Young, of Llanbedr Airfield estates, said: “This is great news and offers a further opportunity for the airfield to be a catalyst for economic regeneration and sustainability.

“The core focus of the airfield going forward remains for the research and development testing and evaluation of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS), however the use of the site for F1 straight line testing on a campaign basis for limited periods can be integrated safely and practically with this.

“It is imperative for the economy that activities which are currently primarily undertaken abroad can now be undertaken on a more cost-effective basis in the UK enabling jobs and investment to be retained.”
