UAV Pilot Tests Data Collection

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) is conducting a one-year pilot project using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to photograph and video collision and crime scenes from the air.

It will be used by the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS) to obtain real-time images that will allow faster data collection at a scene, better analysis of scenes and better support for testimony in court.

ICARS is testing a $33,000 (£21,000) package that includes a Draganflyer X6 UAV, two controllers, base station, video goggles, a camera and battery packs. It is made by Draganfly Innovations, a Canadian company based in Saskatoon. If, after testing, such aerial imaging is deemed to be valuable, the procurement will be put out to tender. Draganfly will not get any advantage if it takes part in the tender.
