Cal UAS gets full county support

By Jack Barnwell

In a universal sign of support, the Kern County Board of Supervisors sent a letter Tuesday to the Federal Aviation Administration supporting the Inyokern-led Cal Unmanned Aircraft Systems Portal team’s bid to secure one of six test sites.

In the letter, the Board of Supervisors touted Inyokern’s remotness in the Mojave Desert, its close proximity to several top-notch military research and development facilities and its immediate access to a large swath of restricted military airspace as the “ideal location for conducting unmanned aerial testing” and research.

Third District Supervisor Mike Maggard, the chair of the board, also stated that the technical collaboration between the Navy and civilian research communities was unmatched due to a long tradition of partnerships in Eastern Kern.

The FAA released its screening information request on Feb. 14, prompting 50 applicants in 37 states to begin the process to be named a test and research site for unmanned aerial vehicles.
