City Council unanimously approves drone aircraft

MONROE, NC (WBTV) –

The Monroe City Council unanimously approved funding for drone aircraft.

Officials told WBTV Friday funds from asset forfeiture will be used to purchase the drones.

Tuesday night, Monroe City Council approved a presentation by the Monroe Police Department for the purchase of an unmanned aircraft for help in critical police situations.

Lt. David Morton with the Monroe Police Department says the drone would be used in critical situations such as bank robberies or other crimes where a suspect might escape on foot. Lt. Morton said the department responded to a bank robbery just two weeks ago where an aerial view would have helped.
