uas-patents.org – A New Service for the International RPAS Community

A new website has been launched by UVS. The purpose of this web site, which has been developed by Blyenburgh & Co, France, is to supply information on international patents concerning unmanned aircraft systems (UAS)/remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS) that are registered with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, and to make these patents and certain relevant search features, accessible to the global UAS/RPAS community, as well as to other possibly interested parties.

Because the international patent classification and the current American patent classification do not yet include UAS/RPAS as a specific reference, the publically accessible web site of the US Patent & Trademark Office does not have a search capability permitting the identification of such patents. This situation is further complicated by the fact that UAS/RPAS are systems-of-systems, and consequently involve many technological reference classes. On top of that, UAS/RPAS terminology has not yet been universally accepted and agreed on, and this situation is clearly reflected in the relevant patent titles and descriptions.

Over a period of 8 years, Blyenburgh & Co’s team of international experts with recognized UAS/RPAS expertise at system & sub-system level, have systematically combed through the database of registered patents available on the U.S. Patent & Trademark Patent web site and have identified a very significant number of relevant registered UAS/RPAS-related patents (2414) at systems & sub-systems level.

Subsequently, a UAS/RPAS classification index (at system and sub-system level) was developed. This classification index permits to reference each patent in a specific class with a dedicated reference number. Because a patent can fit into several reference classes, each patent can be referenced with a primary, secondary and tertiary class.

Finally, a search engine, permitting to sort the identified registered patents by title, classification, assignee, inventor, country of origin, was created.

In a second stage, Blyenburgh & Co envisages to offer the same type of service for the international UAS/RPAS-related patent applications that have been submitted with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, but that have not yet been registered. In preparation, we have already identified and collected more than 3000 patent applications. When this service is available, it will be posted on www.uas-patents.org.
