NORTH SAANICH – The University of Victoria is hoping new federal funding will help continue its cutting-edge research into unmanned air vehicle (UAV) technology.

On Friday, North Vancouver MP Andrew Saxton, announced $671,500 in funding for UVic’s new Centre for Aerospace Research at Victoria International Airport.

Researchers believe the UAVs, which are similar to small airplanes, are an untapped market that could benefit several industries.

Over the past decade, UAVs have been used mainly as military tools but it’s believed the air crafts have major commercial potential.

Once fully developed, the UAVs could be marketed to several industries.

A small centre at VIA will become the permanent site for students to develop and further the technology.
