POWAY — Poway-based General Atomics Aeronautical Systems has been awarded an $87.3 million government contract to provide the Air Force with retrofit kits and installations for up to 80 MQ-9 Reaper unmanned aerial vehicles, the Defense Department announced.

Work on the aircraft, typically referred to as drones, is scheduled to be completed by Aug. 17, 2016. All work will be done in San Diego.

General Atomics has been awarded about $619 million worth of contracts since July. Late last month, it won a $120.6 million contract to provide the Air Force spare parts and ground support equipment for MQ-9 Reapers.
